DOUBLE SUMMER EVENT OF CANOE SPRINT IN AURONZO DI CADORE

FROM 4 TO 9 JULY THE JUNIOR AND UNDER 23 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. FROM 16 TO 18 JUNE THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AS A ‘DRESS REHEARSAL’.

In the summer of 2023, Auronzo di Cadore will experience an intense “honeymoon” with sprint canoeing, a discipline that includes kayaking and Canadian canoeing. This sport has already been at home on Lake Santa Caterina for at least four decades, with the first presences going back to the fifties.

But there is much more. For about ten years, a long and farsighted work has begun which has seen the Municipal Administration of Auronzo alongside Venice Canoe and Dragon Boat, the sports association that has taken charge of the historic International Canoe Sprint Race, at the same time launching an effective collaboration with the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation (FICK), to bring major international events of this sport to Auronzo di Cadore.

The first success was achieved in 2015, with the European Dragon Boat Championships for Nations and Clubs. In 2018, the realisation of the Junior and Under23 European Championships was a great success and the premise for nominating the alpine lake of Santa Caterina and obtaining the assignment of the 2023 ICF Junior and Under 23 World Championships.  From 4 to 9 July over 1,000 young athletes, representing the world’s top in this discipline, will challenge each other on the Cadore lake which will be set up for the occasion with numerous structures (finish tower, grandstands, marquees, pontoons, etc.). The races will be held over the distances of 200, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 metres and for an entire week the area will be transformed and filled with colours, flags, boats, and canoe enthusiastis.

But that’s not all.  Although the world championships event requires many preparations, the annual appointment with the International Competition has also been maintained. Open to Clubs and National teams, it will be held from 16 to 18 June over the same distances as general test to the event in July. It will be an opportunity to test the competition area and all the equipment, with a view to sustainability, and combines the testing of the technical aspects with the possibility of offering many athletes the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a World Championships event.

A great organisational effort, but also a great challenge for Auronzo and Cadore, with the aim of following up these great events in the coming years, allowing for the an anticipated opening of the tourist season and above all to make the Tre Cime of Lavaredo known throughout the world. These events are an important driving force for tourism in the coming years, alternative and complementary to the classic mountain activities.
