LAST DAY OF RACES. THE 2023 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ENDS SUCCESSFULLY, IN THE MOST SUGGESTIVE LOCATION THAT THE HISTORY OF CANOE SPRINT HAS EVER HAD, AS TOSHI FURUYA, CANOE SPRINT COMMITTEE CHAIR, SAID.

Final day, the fifth, of the ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Auronzo di Cadore. Still reign of Hungary (4 gold today, for a total of 25), and with the first gold for Brazil, in the C1 U23 men 500 meters. Italy sets a record, and reaches 14 medals – 5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze – surpassing the record of 11 metals achieved last year in Szeged (Hungary). In the medal table of the event, Italy is in third place behind Hungary (43) and Germany (22).

Canadian canoe: Marco Tontodonati (ITA) gold medal in the C1 500 meters junior, with an impressive progression in the second part of the race, in 1.51.26, putting behind the Hungarian Istvan Juhasz, silver in 1.51.83 with the bronze going to the Macedonian Mihail Culceac (1.52.16). Tontodonati then repeated in the afternoon, winning silver in the C1 5000 meters junior.

Filipe Vieira takes the first gold for Brazil in 1.47.12, while the silver goes to the Czech Jiri Minarik in 1.48.03. Gabriele Casadei (ITA) took the bronze medal in the C1 500 meters under 23 with a time of 1.48.03.

4th place for Sara Del Gratta in the K1 500 junior final with a time of 1.56.63. The outgoing world champion and new world champion over the distance of 200 meters, is unable to keep up with the Hungarian gold medalist Angelina Szegedi (1.53.44). Silver for the Australian Claudia Bailey (1.53.56), bronze for the German Caroline Heuser (1.53.63).

    THE BALANCE

The first comment comes from Toshi Furuya, ICF Canoe sprint committee chair: “I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Organizing Committee. This World Championships will leave a special and unforgettable memory in all of us. Living experiences like this means for these young paddlers to gain strength and motivation for their future. It is a privilege to live the Junior and U23 World Championships in this wonderful natural area, within a UNESCO heritage site as the Dolomites”.

The General manager of the Organizing Committee Andrea Bedin underlined the unicity of Auronzo di Cadore: “The 2023 Canoe World Championships in Auronzo di Cadore will be remembered as a memorable event, because they represent a sign of discontinuity with all that was seen before”. Among the innovative aspects we find the location of an alpine lake surrounded by mountains, the color of the water, the introduction of the Mixed Relay, the social life of the athlete during free time. “Thanks have arrived from the International Canoe Federation and from the 64 countries represented. An unprecedented legacy for Auronzo di Cadore, which will be able to guarantee a flow of international presences for the next years”.

Great satisfaction from the mayor of Auronzo di Cadore Dario Vecellio Galeno, who underlined how everyone has done their part, and the World Championships has been a success both for the public and for the hospitality of athletes and technical teams . “Large investments have been made in recent years to adapt the competition field and the starting blocks to the needs of a World Championship, as well as to have all the structures that can be seen around here. For this we must see here a starting point, not an arrival point, for this project. We are proud to host the international canoe”.
